Directions:
In each of the following sentences, a part of the sentence has been italicised. Below are given alternatives to the part italicised which may improve the sentence. Choose the correct alternative. Wherever no improvement is needed, choose 'No correction required' or 'No improvement' as the answer.
It is time the six-year-old is learning how to read and write.
Answer: (a)
As the statement is of a general nature, use of the simple present tense is correct. No continuous action at a certain period of time is suggested.
When the soldiers realised that they had been fooled, they rush back.
Answer: (d)
The simple past tense is to be used to keep tense continuity in the sentence. Option (c), 'had rushed' (past perfect tense), would be incorrect here as, as soon as the soldiers 'realised', they 'rushed' back (not before 'realising').
Last evening I went to the optician and bought spectacles.
Answer: (d)
'Spectacles' (pl.) itself means a pair of lenses for correcting the eyesight. Interestingly, 'pair of spectacles' is a cricketing term used to mean a duck in both innings.
I am used to hard work.
Answer: (d)
No improvement. The italicised part may also read 'working hard'.
Since 1986, there is no earthquakes here.
Answer: (c)
'Since + a point in time' means 'from that point to the time of speaking'. It is then always used with a perfect tense (has + the past participle, have + the past participle or had + the past participle). For example, I have been working since six o'clock or We've been friends since our college days. The only exception is in the 'it is + period + since' construction. For example, It is ten years since I saw him.
